Milestones

This is the section that a lot of other websites would call "History". However, our operation is developing constantly, and each advance is based on previous experience and discovery. Round each corner is a fresh challenge or a new opportunity. That's the way it's been for three exciting, ground-breaking decades, and that's only the beginning.

Here is a small selection of milestones to date:

It all started as a coincidence.

Three local pilots - David Sundström, Per-Axel Andersson and Per Dahlberg - had made a winter runway by clearing the snow from part of Lake Hornavan one cold winter's day in early 1973.

Some representatives of the Opel in German were staying at the local hotel, and saw the runway. They asked the hotel manager, Harold Tallfält, (who also happened to be the chairman in the local aviation club) about the unusual runway, and if he thought it would be possible to use the ice for some brake testing.

"Sure, lets ask them" he said.

"Sure, why not?" the pilots answered.

No one could have imagined what impact the three pilots' answer would mean to Arjeplog and its surroundings. Word of the unusually grim winter, good service and suitable test conditions was spreading fast. In the 1980s more and more companies moved their test facilities to Arjeplog, and it was soon recognised as the world's leading winter test centre.

Today more than 1,000 people from the car testing industry work at Arjeplog, and the industry's investment amounts to 54 MEUR.
